The discovery of active seafloor hydrothermal systems has had a major impact on the field of economic geology. Indeed, the study of these natural laboratories has led to a substantial refinement of our models of ore-forming processes, particularly as applied to volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits. After a review of hydrothermal mineralization at oceanic ridges, this thematic issue examines hydrothermal processes at the Eastern and Northeastern Pacific Ridges, at the Mid-Atlantic and Mid-Indian Ridges, and at the Red Sea Rift.
